Caterham Cars made its debut at the Regent Street Motor Show this year (Saturday, October 31).
Caterham has never been a ‘cars on carpet’ exhibitor at shows and it approached this event no differently. Instead of simply displaying a car on the iconic London street, Caterham showcased its appeal as a car you can build at home by staging a live build of one of its legendary Sevens.
The challenge was that the one-day event meant that Caterham had to be in and out of its spot on Regent Street by 5pm, so the part-built car needed to be finished and ready to drive off the street by then. We set a crack team of Caterham technicians on to the task and gave them five and a half hours to complete the task.
Caterham Sevens in component form take roughly 80 man hours to build from scratch so it was always going to be a challenge, even for seasoned Caterham engineers. But it was clearly one they relished, as they completed the build and fired up the 135bhp, 1.6-litre Ford Sigma engine bolted into the chassis with 45 minutes to spare.
As one of the more interactive displays on Regent Street, Caterham’s stand was one of the most keenly attended by the thousands of visitors to the show and drew plenty of attention during the day.
There are two videos to choose from charting the Regent Street Motor Show live build:
